Sherman & Howard Summer Associates Exchange Law for Power Tools – Spend Day Helping Habitat for Humanity
June 25, 2009 (Denver) - Ten Sherman & Howard summer associates took a break from the business of law and the city of Denver recently - spending Tuesday June 16th in Evergreen, Colorado volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. The group helped with framing, installing siding, roofing and doors on a duplex. And some of them got acquainted with power tools for the first time.
"A few people were nervous about using the nail gun," noted summer associate Jake Spratt, who added that his odd assortment of summer jobs had prepared him for the construction work. This was the first time Spratt had volunteered for Habitat, however.
"I learned a lot about what goes on behind the scenes and how Habitat chooses the people they will help," he noted. "They actually require recipients to pay a mortgage." According to Habitat's website, it "is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor (sweat equity) into building their Habitat house and the houses of others."
Sherman & Howard's Marcy Heronimus, coordinator of the Firm's summer associate program, adds that spending the day volunteering, "not only benefits an important organization, but also takes all of us beyond the normal scope of our work to benefit the larger community that we're a part of." This is the second year that Sherman & Howard summer associates have spent a day helping Habitat for Humanity help families in need.
